Introducing: ASP.NET Core 1.0
On June 27, Microsoft announced the official release of ASP.NET Core 1.0. Have you missed some of the twists and turns while the project was being developed? No problem, we were following it closely, and we’ve got you covered on all things .NET Core and ASP.NET Core. Keep reading and we’ll catch you up on this revolutionary and important development for .NET developers.
Underlying ASP.NET Core is a completely rewritten, completely open-source version of the .NET Framework called .NET Core that can…wait for it…run on Linux and Mac, as well as Windows! You read that right. Now .NET is fully cross-platform. Of course, the .NET Framework we know and love will continue to be a part of the Windows OS for the foreseeable future, and also received a recent update with .NET 4.6.1, but you now have the option to target .NET Core in your .NET projects while developing and running it all on any platform.
ASP.NET Core is also new, completely rewritten, and completely open-source. It’s the newest version of ASP.NET and is able to target either the full .NET Framework or .NET Core. It comes with some really cool features like built-in dependency injection, better support for open-source JavaScript tools like gulp, grunt, and npm, as well as some server-side changes like tag helpers. Tag helpers allow you to write very clean HTML in your ASP.NET MVC views, and then mark it up with AngularJS-like directives that will run on the server-side and modify the HTML your views output.
Other important improvements include support for development outside of Visual Studio with command line tools that are truly first class citizens of the ASP.NET Core environment. Because it’s been completely rewritten with performance in mind, the number of requests per second it can handle will really knock your socks off!
Paired with ASP.NET Core is also a completely rewritten cross-platform Entity Framework Core, sometimes called EF 7, which integrates tightly with ASP.NET Core and Microsoft Identity.
Trailhead Has Already Been There and Done That
ASP.NET Core may be fresh off the presses, but at Trailhead we have been developing with it since January, and already have two projects migrated to the new framework! We started at RC1, migrated through to RC2 (which was a major change!) and finally transitioned to RTM.
One of the projects that we developed is set to go live in August this year. It was a rewrite of a legacy application that had been around for 10 years, so we chose to leapfrog them all the way to the forefront of technology, so it will last another decade. The project uses Xamarin mobile that calls an ASP.NET Core Web API, access a SQL Server back end using Entity Framework Core and also sports an angular Web Front End that uses the same Core Web API.
Working through the various .NET Core release candidates was an interesting experience, especially as tooling and continuous integration/deployment has been in a churn trying to keep up. But we did it! And now we are ready to help guide you through this process!
Need a Guide?
There is lot of new technology, tools & concepts in ASP.NET Core, and if your head is spinning with it all, don’t worry. At Trailhead, we’ve got you covered with consulting and training on ASP.NET Core.
Do you have a team that you’d like to get up to speed? Join us for our online training class September 7 – 9 and we’ll walk you through, step-by-step, everything you need to know about ASP.NET Core. Or, maybe it makes more sense for us to come to you and train your team on-site.
Maybe you have don’t have a team and would like to hire our experienced team to help you realize your projects? We have a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) in ASP.NET and a whole team of top-notch engineers with experience creating and launching multiple ASP.NET Core projects.
