Manual accessibility testing is the process of evaluating how usable a digital product is for people with disabilities by simulating real-world interactions that automated tools cannot fully detect.

While automated checks are a helpful first step, they cover only a fraction of accessibility issues.

Should We Do Manual Accessibility Testing?

The short answer is YES, and the sooner, the better. Treating accessibility as a checklist item at the end of a project can be a costly, avoidable mistake.

When accessibility is built into the development process from the beginning, it not only saves time and rework, but also leads to cleaner, more maintainable code and a better user experience overall.

We need to think about accessibility as a mindset, not an afterthought. A well-structured, accessible site is often faster, more intuitive, and easier to navigate for everyone.

Accessibility Standards

WCAG Guidelines

Luckily, we do not need to guess what accessible design looks like. There is a clear global standard: the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).

Created by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), WCAG outlines detailed, testable success criteria that help developers and designers make digital content more accessible.

These criteria are organized into three levels:

  • Level A (minimum basic accessibility)
  • Level AA (enhanced accessibility, and the most commonly required)
  • Level AAA (very strict and often impractical for full coverage)

Practical and Testable

Most laws and corporate policies in Europe, the U.S., and beyond require compliance with at least Level A and AA. These levels cover everything from keyboard access and text alternatives to contrast ratios and logical page structure.

WCAG does not dictate how you build your UI, but it helps you ask the right questions: Can a user navigate this page without a mouse? Do buttons have meaningful labels? Is the color contrast readable?

It turns accessibility from a vague goal into something practical, testable, and achievable.

The Gateway To A and AA Levels

Why Keyboard Testing First?

One of the most effective ways to cover a large portion of WCAG 2.1 Level A and AA requirements is through manual keyboard testing.

Many accessibility barriers become obvious when navigating a website or application without a mouse. Can all interactive elements be reached using the Tab key? Is the focus order logical and predictable? Are buttons, links, and form inputs visibly focused when selected?

These simple checks directly map to several success criteria, such as 2.1.1 (Keyboard), 2.4.3 (Focus Order), and 2.4.7 (Focus Visible).

Uncovering Hidden Issues

Keyboard testing also highlights issues with custom components such as dropdowns or modals that may not be properly accessible by default.

By systematically tabbing through a page, developers can quickly uncover usability gaps that automated tools often miss and ensure that users relying on keyboard navigation have a seamless experience.

It is a foundational practice in building accessible products and meeting core compliance requirements.
